Central Oregon is an up-and-coming golf destination, providing great golf and a variety of interesting off-course activities.
Visitors will find rugged landscape featuring ponderosa pines, views of snow-capped peaks, and high desert terrain, which makes for scenic, memorable golf courses.
With 31 golf courses within a 30-mile radius, the area has plenty of golf courses from which to choose, with a wide variety of styles and geography.
Three Central Oregon courses have been on Golf Digest’s list of “America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses.” They are Pronghorn Club’s Jack Nicklaus Signature Course, Sunriver Resort’s Crosswater Club, and Tetherow Golf Club. These three courses showcase the variety of courses designs available in the area.
Pronghorn Club’s Jack Nicklaus course provides a minimalist experience where ancient lava rock ridges and outcroppings intertwine with natural landscaping accenting magnificent views of the Cascade Mountains.
Crosswater Club is a heathland-style course situated on acres of woodlands and carefully preserved wetlands. It is threaded by the gently flowing Deschutes and Little Deschutes Rivers. Depending on tee selection the rivers can come into play as often as seven times in a round.
Tetherow Golf Club is visually striking links-style design. The routing takes full advantage of the stunning panoramic views of the Cascade peaks, as well as the rugged high desert terrain.
FEATURED CENTRAL OREGON GOLF COURSES
Sunriver Resort: Crosswater Club, Meadows Golf Course, Woodlands Golf Course, Caldera Links. Only Sunriver Resort guests may play Crosswater Club. The other courses are open to public play. Caldera Links is a 9-hole, Par 3 Course. Crosswater, designed by Bob Cupp, is a heathland-style course situated on 600 magnificently scenic acres of woodlands and carefully preserved wetlands. Meadows is acclaimed architect John Fought’s latest creation. The course features tremendous variety within its 18 holes, seven of which border the meandering Sun River. Woodlands was designed by internationally celebrated golf course architect Robert Trent Jones Jr. It has dense forests of Ponderosa and Lodgepole Pine, outcroppings of lava rock and an abundance of water.
Black Butte Ranch: Big Meadow Course and Blaze Meadow Course. These are two scenic and challenging championship courses that showcase sculpted fairways and breathtaking views of the Cascade Mountains.
Pronghorn Resort: Jack Nicklaus Signature Course and Tom Fazio Championship Course (the Tom Fazio Course is private and availability may be limited). The Jack Nicklaus course provides an emphasis on the golf game itself—combining strategy with playability, beautiful transitions and true putting surfaces. Ancient lava rock ridges and outcroppings intertwine with natural landscaping accenting magnificent views of the Cascade Mountains. The Tom Fazio-designed course blends the challenge of championship golf with the inherent aesthetic of the natural terrain. Rolling fairways and sculpted greens are punctuated by ancient lava rocks, stunning water features and dramatic juniper trees.
Tetherow Golf Club: Recently voted a Top 10 course in Oregon by Golf Digest, Tetherow was designed by David McLay Kidd – the award-winning architect of Bandon Dunes and Castle Course in Scotland. In addition to its link-style layout, Tetherow has the largest fleet of GolfBoards in the country. The solo rider stands upright and can choose either of two speeds. GolfBoards add a new dimension of fun, action and excitement while improving speed of play, reducing turf wear and allowing golfers to surf in a way previously reserved for surfers and snowboarders.

During a recent trip, we spent the morning on a guided fly-fishing trip on the Deschutes River. Between the two of us, we caught and released about a dozen trout. Then, we played 18 holes in the afternoon on Sunriver Resort’s Crosswater Club. The evening was spent at a local brew-pub sampling a wide variety of local beers. We wrapped up the day with a great dinner at another local brew pub.
